neglect the forest for the trees and
focus on some far off horizon. When it
comes to getting away, this can prove to
be quite detrimental, for the further away
you go, the more expensive it typically
becomes. With your next getaway, instead
of focusing on some far off point on the
horizon, try to get to know your
surrounding area. You'll find gems that
you never knew existed.
Start by contacting your local Convention & Visitor's Bureau. They're manned with people dedicated to helping others just like you discover the region's attractions and potential adventures and will thus serve as a valuable resource for getting to know your geographic region. Ask for a guide to the area, possible itineraries and calendar of events, as well as a map. Don't worry, it's all free! Many are even located in this guide. After contacting your local CVB, try your state, and your bordering states', tourism hotlines. They too will answer all of your questions and provide guides, itineraries, calendar of events, and maps typically free of charge and thus can help you start to clear out the trees for the forest view. Once you've received your information, start exploring. Give yourself an excursion radius for each day and then go for it. Take the back roads. Stop at places that pique your curiosity. Try the local restaurants and shops. Go on a hike. And don't be afraid to stay longer. After all, it's your backyard so you can return as often as you'd like! |
